Poor Urban Planning Linked to Nigeria's Insecurity Issues

During the 12th Wahe Kadiri Lecture Series organized by the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) Ogun State Chapter, Vice Chancellor Ojediran delivered a keynote address emphasizing that poor urban planning is a major factor fueling insecurity in Nigeria. He noted that criminal activities thrive in poorly planned neighborhoods, characterized by abandoned buildings, unlit streets, and congested corridors that limit visibility and response times for security forces.

Ojediran argued that insecurity in Nigeria is not accidental but closely linked to urban design and infrastructure. He proposed a six-point plan that includes designing roads and public spaces with security in mind, installing decentralized lighting systems, and enhancing community networks to monitor crime-prone areas.

The lecture honored Alhaji Wahe Kadiri on his 75th birthday, with Ogun State Commissioner Tunji Odunlami and Governor Dapo Abiodun supporting the need for improved urban planning to enhance citizen safety.
