Cooking Gas Prices in Nigeria: A 20-Year Overview

Since the return to democratic governance in Nigeria in 1999, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) has increased dramatically. In the early 2000s, one kilogramme of cooking gas was priced around ₦100.

By 2026, prices ranged from ₦1,250 to ₦1,650 per kilogramme, with spikes exceeding ₦2,000 during scarcity. A World Bank LPG sector study indicated that in Lagos, prices for a 12.5kg cylinder were between ₦1,200 and ₦1,300, translating to approximately ₦96 to ₦104 per kg.

Prices fluctuated sharply, with a 12.5kg refill costing around ₦1,700, or ₦136 per kg, during certain periods. Severe shortages in 2006 saw prices rise to ₦2,600 for a 12.5kg refill, equating to ₦208 per kg.

By 2007, consumers faced costs of ₦2,200 to ₦3,000 for a refill, translating to ₦176 to ₦240 per kg. The expansion of Nigeria LNG's domestic LPG supply program during this time aimed to stabilize prices.
