Cooking Gas Prices Surge to N1,500 per Kilogram in Nigeria

The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria has risen to approximately N1,500 per kilogram, up from N1,200, representing a 25% increase. This change adds further financial strain on households already dealing with elevated energy costs.

The price hike means that filling a 12.5kg cylinder now costs about N18,750, a difference of N3,750 compared to the previous price. Concurrently, diesel prices have also surged, with Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) exceeding N2,000 per litre at various depots, reaching as high as N2,300 at some retail locations.

This increase in fuel prices could elevate operating costs for manufacturers, transport operators, and small businesses reliant on diesel. A report from September 16, 2026, indicated significant price adjustments in Lagos, with dealers like Ibachem and Ibeto raising diesel prices substantially.

Lawal Kamaldeen, Vice-President of the Oil and Gas Service Providers Association of Nigeria (OGSPAN), attributed the volatility in prices to international developments, including the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
