SERAP Urges Tinubu to Investigate N6.79bn Police Fund Misuse

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate a thorough investigation into allegations of misappropriation of over N6.79 billion in public funds within the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs. This request follows findings in the Auditor-General’s Annual Report published on September 9, 2025, which SERAP described as a "grave betrayal of the public trust." The report outlines various financial irregularities, including payments for unexecuted projects, abandoned contracts, and missing firearms and ammunition.

SERAP's letter, dated August 1, 2026, urges Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate and prosecute those responsible. SERAP has given the government a seven-day deadline to respond or face legal action, citing constitutional provisions that mandate the state to combat corruption and ensure public safety.
