Reps Issue Ultimatum to REA MD Over Fund Mismanagement

The House of Representatives has given a two-day ultimatum to Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and Olufemi Akinyelure, head of the Nigeria Electrification Programme, to appear before a committee investigating the agency's management of funds allocated for renewable energy projects from 2015 to 2024. The committee, chaired by Anambra lawmaker Afam Ogen, expressed dissatisfaction with the agency's leadership for failing to honor previous invitations.

The committee warned that if the two officials do not appear by March 5, 2026, they may face arrest. The investigation aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public donor funds, particularly in the renewable energy sector, which is vital for economic growth and rural development.

The committee's oversight responsibilities include examining the disbursement of funds and compliance with statutory financial regulations. A letter dated February 27, 2026, emphasized the committee's authority over the REA's financial operations and project implementations.
