Reps Summon REA Boss Over Renewable Energy Projects

On February 26, 2026, the House of Representatives summoned Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), to address questions concerning ongoing renewable power projects across Nigeria. This summons followed Aliyu's failure to attend an earlier investigative hearing at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, which was part of the House's oversight activities mandated by an October 2022 resolution.

The committee, chaired by Afam Ogen, is conducting a comprehensive audit of renewable energy interventions implemented by the REA, particularly focusing on the execution of energy education programs in phases II and III. The committee expects Aliyu to present original certified true copies of contract award letters, executive agreements, and technical specifications related to various solar hybrid installations at several federal universities.

The investigation aims to assess the utilization of foreign grants and government investments in the renewable energy sector since 2015, addressing concerns over the widespread failure of public lighting infrastructure and the overall value of public investments.
