SERAP Urges Probe of Nigerian Senate Over Electoral Act and Tax Law Irregularities

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to probe the Nigerian Senate for allegedly removing provisions related to electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act amendment bill and altering the tax reform law without proper approval. SERAP accuses certain lawmakers of serving private political interests rather than the public good.

The Senate denies the claims, stating that the term "real-time" was removed due to judicial concerns. Lawmaker Abdussamad Dasuki raised the issue of discrepancies in the tax reform bill, alleging unauthorized alterations.

SERAP's petition highlights potential conflicts of interest, abuse of office, and breach of due process by lawmakers and the executive branch. The organization requests a transparent investigation to uphold public trust and adherence to the Code of Conduct for public officials.

The CCB is urged to consider the complaint within seven days, with legal action threatened if no response is received by February 7, 2026.
