Protests Erupt in Abia State Demanding Nnamdi Kanu's Release

On Monday, residents of Afarukwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, staged a peaceful protest demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The demonstrators marched through major roads, displaying banners and chanting in support of Kanu.

Alloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, shared video clips of the protest, where participants wore traditional attire and sang in Igbo. Ejimakor urged South-East governors to seek a political resolution to Kanu’s case, emphasizing that the conviction was politically motivated.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at a Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Sokoto, following his conviction in November 2025 by Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges. His appeal is pending before the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

Community leaders and civil society groups have called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to pursue a political solution to promote peace in the South-East. U.S.

Congressman John James has also advocated for Kanu's release, citing concerns over human rights violations.
