SERAP Urges Presidential Candidates to Disclose Assets

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on all 19 presidential candidates announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission to disclose their assets and liabilities, including those of their spouses and unmarried children under 18, ahead of the 2027 presidential election. This request was made in an open letter dated August 8, 2026, signed by SERAP's Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

The candidates include President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, and others from various political parties. SERAP urged candidates to embrace higher standards of transparency and accountability, stating that those seeking public office must demonstrate their financial affairs can withstand public scrutiny.

Although the Nigerian Constitution does not require such disclosures, SERAP emphasized that candidates should voluntarily reject vote-buying and uphold integrity in their campaigns.
