REA Partners with VIDA to Enhance Rural Electrification

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has renewed its partnership with German artificial intelligence and data analytics company, VIDA place GmbH, to enhance data-driven electricity planning and accelerate Nigeria’s goal of universal electricity access. This one-year partnership renewal was signed on Wednesday in Abuja during the visit of Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr.

Abba Aliyu, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of REA, stated that the collaboration would enable more efficient deployment of public funds for electricity provision to underserved communities. He emphasized the need for accurate data to identify communities lacking electricity and to determine the least-cost approach for connecting them.

Nigeria has secured a $750 million World Bank-funded program aimed at electrifying 17.5 million Nigerians. VIDA has developed an AI-powered platform that maps communities, providing essential information on household numbers and electrification status, thereby improving transparency in subsidy allocation under the World Bank-funded Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up program.
