Tinubu's Reasons for Egbetokun's Resignation as IGP

President Bola Tinubu asked former Inspector General of Police, Egbetokun, to resign, which was not entirely voluntary, as reported by sources within the presidency. This decision was announced on February 24, shortly before Olatunji Disu was named the acting Inspector General of Police.

One main reason for Egbetokun's removal was Tinubu's push for the creation of state police to better address local security needs, a proposal that faced opposition from figures like Ben Okolo, who warned against state control of police due to potential misuse by governors. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding Egbetokun's management of police officers assigned to protect VIPs, as there were reports of low compliance with security protocols.

Another factor in his removal was linked to the International Press Institute Nigeria's criticism of Egbetokun's leadership, particularly regarding the harassment of journalists, with 24 reported cases of arrests and detentions under his tenure. Tinubu's administration aims to address these pressing issues with the new leadership in the Nigeria Police Force.
