46 Bodies Recovered in Sokoto Boat Accident, 15 Rescued

A tragic boat accident occurred on Thursday in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulting in the recovery of at least 46 bodies and the rescue of 15 passengers. The boat, which was transporting farmers and other passengers to their rice farms, capsized with 77 individuals on board.

The Sokoto State Police Command, represented by spokesman DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining 16 passengers. The rescue team includes local divers, officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Police.

The cause of the accident is currently unknown. The incident has caused significant mourning in the Gorau community, with families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.

A local resident reported that the accident took place in the morning, prompting immediate search efforts by divers and emergency responders. This incident follows a similar boat accident in Kijio community, also in Goronyo Local Government Area, exactly one year prior.
