Mahdi Shehu Critiques Rehabilitation of Boko Haram Members

Mahdi Shehu, a public affairs commentator, has expressed strong criticism regarding the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate former insurgents, particularly members of Boko Haram and ISWAP, into society. He argues that this approach sends a dangerous message to victims of terrorism and undermines the rule of law.

Shehu emphasizes that the state has a duty to maintain law and order and protect the lives and properties of its citizens without compromise. He highlights the recent graduation of 700 repentant Boko Haram members from a de-radicalization program, which he believes could provoke anger among victims' families and potentially lead to retaliatory actions.

Shehu warns that this could create unintended incentives for crime, especially among unemployed youth, who might reconsider their loyalties and turn to criminal activities such as kidnapping. He stresses that forgiveness is a prerogative of God and not the responsibility of the government.
