Her breakthrough came in 1992 with the album "Miss Perfumado," which sold 500,000 copies in France alone and established her as one of the best-selling African artists in the United States during the 20th century.

Despite her fame, Évora remained humble, often performing barefoot not as a statement but due to discomfort in shoes. Her career faced challenges, including a battle with depression and alcohol, but she returned to music in the mid-1980s, supported by fellow artists and record labels. Évora's influence continues to shape Cape Verdean music, with tributes planned, including a concert at London's Barbican featuring various artists.
