House of Reps Passes Food Security Bill Amid Security Concerns

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a food security bill through its second reading, with lawmakers stressing the importance of effective implementation in light of Nigeria's deteriorating security situation. Hon. Patrick Okafor, Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, assured that the bill would not impose a financial burden on the federal or sub-national governments.

The proposed legislation includes provisions for self-sustainability through member subscriptions and grants. During the debate, lawmakers highlighted the broader challenges facing Nigeria, particularly insecurity and kidnapping, which impact citizens' safety.

Okafor noted that the success of the bill depends largely on the ability of states to enforce protective measures for citizens. He also expressed concerns about the criminalization of ransom payments without first strengthening national security.

The bill received overwhelming support and was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security for further legislative action.
