Nigeria's Reps Propose National Alcohol Regulation Framework

The Nigerian House of Representatives has initiated a move to create a comprehensive national framework for the regulation of alcohol consumption in Nigeria. This effort is spearheaded by Oluwatimehin Adelegb, the chairman of the House Adhoc Committee on Drug Trafficking, Tobacco, and Alcohol Abuse.

The proposed legislation, which has already passed its first reading, seeks to regulate the import, distribution, advertising, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria. It aims to introduce stronger safeguards for minors and vulnerable groups.

Adelegb presented the proposal in Abuja, emphasizing the need to address rising concerns about alcohol abuse and its impact on public health, road safety, and domestic violence. The bill intends to balance public health concerns with the legitimate interests of manufacturers and distributors in the alcohol industry.

Extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including public health experts and civil society groups, have informed the proposal. The legislation aims to align Nigeria's alcohol policies with international public health standards and improve data collection and enforcement mechanisms.
