Reps Call for Relief Aid for Niger Rainstorm Victims

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to provide relief materials to victims of a severe rainstorm that recently struck Mokwa, Niger State. The motion was adopted following a presentation by Joshua Gana, a member representing Lavun/Mokwa Federal Constituency.

The rainstorm, accompanied by strong winds, resulted in widespread destruction of homes, loss of lives, and damage to properties. Preliminary reports indicated that several lives were lost, many residents were injured, and hundreds were rendered homeless.

The storm disrupted economic and educational activities, particularly affecting the Niger State University of Agriculture and Aquaculture. The House acknowledged the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to broader environmental and climate-related challenges.

They emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and called for a comprehensive assessment by the National Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. The lawmakers mandated relevant committees to ensure prompt intervention and long-term rehabilitation of the affected areas.
