Nigerian Resident Doctors Extend Strike Suspension by Four Weeks

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) in Nigeria has decided to extend the suspension of their strike by four weeks following a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held during a scientific conference in Plateau State from January 25 to 29, 2026. The decision was communicated in a communique signed by Mohammad Suleiman, the NARD President.

The extension aims to provide the government with a final opportunity to address the doctors' demands, including the clearance of outstanding salary arrears and allowances. The NEC acknowledged the intervention of the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) in addressing some issues.

However, concerns were raised about delays in implementing certain agreements, leading to the indefinite extension of the strike suspension. The doctors emphasized the need for prompt payment of arrears and the resolution of salary-related issues in various federal health institutions.

Vice President Kashim Shettima was mentioned for his involvement in the negotiations.
