Ondo Residents Protest Killings, Demand Security Action

On Saturday, residents of Akur North Local Government Area in Ondo State staged a protest in response to a recent wave of violence that left at least two people dead and several others injured. The protests were triggered by a failed kidnapping attempt in Igushin Community, where the daughter of a poultry farm owner was shot dead. Less than 24 hours later, gunmen attacked Ilado Community, abducting a popular youth who was reportedly macheted and shot while trying to escape. During the protest, youth leader Simpli Kunle condemned the unchecked operations of armed criminals in the area and questioned the utilization of the state’s security votes, arguing that the impact of these funds has not been felt amidst worsening security conditions. He highlighted the continuous killings and kidnappings in Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado, demanding a visible security presence and intervention. The protest reflects growing frustration among residents over the government's failure to ensure safety, with Kunle warning that demonstrations will persist until decisive actions are taken.
