Lagos Deputy Governor Calls for Increased Infrastructure Budget

On Monday, Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat expressed the need for a larger budget to address the state's significant infrastructure demands, citing rising costs and rapid population growth as key pressures. Speaking on a Fresh FM radio programme, he noted that while the government is investing heavily in critical sectors, the available resources are insufficient.

Hamzat identified transport, housing, healthcare, and education as areas needing sustained funding. He revealed that the cost of road rehabilitation has sharply increased, with estimates exceeding N700 billion as early as 2011.

Major projects like the Fourth Mainland Bridge remain on the agenda but require substantial financial commitment. He mentioned that the Lagos State Public Works Corporation has increased its maintenance teams from 14 to 34 to improve road conditions.

Hamzat stressed the need for integrated planning in road construction and drainage management to prevent flooding, given Lagos's low-lying terrain. He also highlighted the necessity for a functional mortgage system to aid residents in home ownership.
