Atiku Abubakar Chooses Amaechi as Running Mate for 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, contemplated selecting Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. However, after discussions with her, it was determined that she would not commit to the project, advising the team to consult widely across Nigeria.

Consequently, Atiku opted for Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transport and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors' Forum, as his running mate. This decision was influenced by strategic considerations to ensure a candidate from the South East filled the vice-presidential slot, especially in light of the absence of a presidential candidate from the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) had also considered various candidates, including Emeka Ihedioha and Ben Obi, but ultimately settled on Amaechi. The decision-making process involved consultations with party stakeholders and was marked by last-minute changes to avoid further divisions within the party.
