Activist Urges Senate to Pass State Police Bill Urgently

Rights activist Comrad Olu Pessu has called on the Nigerian Senate to urgently pass the State Police Bill, which he believes is essential for tackling the increasing insecurity issues in Nigeria. Pessu, who is the chairman of the Olu Pessu Foundation, emphasized the importance of the bill in a statement issued on June 10, 2026.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Opeyemi Bamidel of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Ekiti Central, seeks to amend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to establish state police. Pessu noted that the House of Representatives had already passed its version of the bill on June 10, 2026, and he believes that if the Senate follows suit and the bill receives assent from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it will significantly address the escalating issues of banditry, kidnapping, and general insecurity facing the nation.
