Riot Erupts Over Ebola Burial Restrictions in DRC Hospital

A riot occurred at Rwampara Hospital in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on Thursday as families protested against Ebola burial restrictions. The unrest was sparked when a 24-year-old man's family, whose father was a soldier, demanded the body for burial, which officials deemed impossible due to Ebola transmission risks.

The World Health Organization reported that the ongoing outbreak has already killed 177 people. As tensions escalated, soldiers were deployed to secure the hospital, but rioters clashed with healthcare workers, throwing stones and causing injuries.

Families expressed disbelief over the Ebola diagnosis, with one brother claiming his sibling was not dead from Ebola but an "imaginary disease." The situation reflects deep-rooted distrust in health authorities, exacerbated by past outbreaks and the perceived slow response from the Congolese government. The burial of three suspected Ebola victims was conducted under strict precautions, with health workers in hazmat suits, as the community mourned amid fears of further contagion.
