Rivers State School Suspended After Toddler's Death

The Rivers State government has suspended the operations of Wisdom Gate International School located in Eligbolo, Obio Akpor Local Government Area, following the tragic death of two-year-old Wynn Akeku. The incident occurred on March 17, 2026, when a bookshelf reportedly fell on her while she was asleep in the classroom.

Parents, Dr. Iasuaka Akeku and Mr.

Chinyerum Akeku, have publicly demanded justice, accusing the school management of concealing information regarding their daughter's death. In response, the school issued a statement last Wednesday denying the allegations and stated that the suspension was necessary to facilitate an independent investigation into the incident.

Dr. Peter Nwagor, the State Commissioner for Education, expressed deep sympathy for the parents and emphasized the need for privacy during their grief.

The school will remain closed until the investigation is resolved, and the ministry is committed to ensuring safety standards in both public and private educational institutions.
