Fedorov Calls for Presidential Election Amid Ukraine War

Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Ukrainian Defence Minister, has called for a presidential election despite the ongoing war with Russia, marking a significant political challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since the invasion began in 2022. In a video address released on Tuesday, Fedorov argued for a “legal, safe and realistic mechanism” to restore Ukraine's democratic process, stating, “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia.” While he did not directly name Zelenskyy, his comments challenge the president's position on holding elections during wartime, as Ukraine remains under martial law, which currently prohibits elections.

Fedorov was dismissed from his ministerial role in July 2023, only six months after his appointment, following tensions with military leadership. His removal sparked protests in Kyiv, with calls for his reinstatement.

Fedorov criticized the governance crisis in Ukraine, highlighting issues of corruption and the need for public confidence. He has not announced plans to run for president, but opinion polls suggest he could be a serious contender in future elections.
