Zelensky Dismisses Army Chief Amid Protests in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed General Oleksandr Syrskyi from his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, just days after the controversial removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov led to nationwide protests. The public pressure on Zelensky intensified due to accusations that Syrskyi was involved in disagreements that contributed to Fedorov's exit.

Zelensky appointed General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a respected and reform-minded officer, as the new Commander-in-Chief. Following his appointment, Drapatyi expressed gratitude to Syrskyi and pledged to fulfill his duties responsibly.

The protests erupted after Fedorov was replaced by Yevhenii Khmara, leading to six days of demonstrations demanding Fedorov's reinstatement and broader military reforms. Syrskyi defended his record, stating that the military had evolved significantly under his leadership, transitioning from a defensive campaign to offensive operations against Russian forces.

Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for his service, particularly during the defense of Kyiv in 2022.
