Ukraine Appoints Khmara as New Defence Minister Amid Conflict

Ukraine has appointed Khmara as the new Defence Minister, succeeding Mykhailo Fedorov, who resigned after calling for elections despite the ongoing conflict. Fedorov argued that Ukraine's democratic process should continue, although wartime elections are currently prohibited under Ukrainian law.

A recent poll indicated that 57 percent of Ukrainians support Fedorov's call for a legal mechanism to facilitate the resumption of democratic processes amid the prolonged conflict. Khmara, a former special forces operative, takes charge of the Defence Ministry at a critical time as Ukraine faces ongoing Russian missile attacks and fighting along the front lines.

His appointment comes amid concerns regarding changes in the country’s defence leadership and broader political debates surrounding the war.
