Sanders and Casar Propose AI Development Ban Legislation

On Thursday, U.S. lawmakers Bernie Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, and Greg Casar, a Democratic representative from Texas, unveiled the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. This legislation seeks to temporarily prohibit the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems, citing the need for stronger government oversight due to the increasing power of AI.

The proposal includes severe penalties for violations, such as a "corporate death penalty" that could strip companies of their legal authority to operate in the U.S. Individuals, including software engineers and executives, could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

The bill specifically targets AI systems that could pose existential threats or undermine government authority. Critics warn that such restrictions could hinder U.S. technological advancement and allow foreign rivals like China and Russia to gain an edge in AI development.

The legislation also proposes the creation of a new Cabinet-level federal agency to regulate frontier AI systems and enforce the proposed restrictions.
