Abia State Urges Market Compliance for Environmental Sanitation

The Abia State government is appealing to market leaders to address the decline in compliance among traders during monthly environmental sanitation exercises. The government observed uneven compliance across major markets, particularly in Umuahia, like Ori Ugba Ubani Market.

Despite repeated directives to close non-compliant shops, some traders continued business activities. The State's Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, expressed dissatisfaction with the negligence of market leadership.

The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) discovered a large accumulation of waste during the exercise, leading to the arrest of 50 defaulters, with 38 later released. The government is enforcing environmental laws and warning of sanctions against defaulters.

Despite lapses, residents are commended for improved compliance. Market leaders are urged to mobilize traders for sanitation and report environmental hazards promptly.

Public participation is encouraged for future exercises to maintain a healthy environment.
