SDP Confirms May 9 Convention, Rejects INEC's Recognition

The Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Prof. Sadiq Gomb, has announced that its nationwide congress will take place on May 9 in Bauchi State, despite ongoing leadership disputes and the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) position.

Gomb emphasized that the party will not be distracted by controversies surrounding its leadership, as the National Working Committee has been preparing for the 2027 elections. Dr.

Olu Agunloye, the party's national secretary, criticized INEC for recognizing Shehu Gabam as the national chairman, labeling it an overreach. Gomb stated that INEC's determination of party leadership is not in accordance with the Electoral Act.

The SDP has rejected INEC's recognition of Gabam, describing it as unconstitutional interference in the party's internal affairs. This dispute follows a court ruling affirming Gabam's leadership, which the SDP contests, asserting that the party's constitution and internal processes were not adhered to.
