SDP Criticizes INEC's Appeal on 2027 Election Timetable

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its decision to appeal a recent court judgment that nullified parts of the electoral timetable for the 2027 general elections. SDP Chairman Sadiq Gomb stated that there is no need for INEC to challenge the ruling, emphasizing that it creates obstacles for political parties and candidates in the electoral process.

Gomb spoke to journalists during a quarterly consultative meeting with INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan in Abuja, expressing confidence in the judiciary's commitment to upholding the rule of law. He questioned the rationale behind INEC's appeal, asserting that it could disenfranchise candidates and infringe upon their fundamental rights.

Gomb also addressed internal leadership disputes within the SDP, indicating a willingness to reconcile factions while maintaining that party leadership matters should be resolved internally without INEC's involvement. The SDP's position comes after two federal high court judgments upheld the party's challenge against certain timelines set by INEC.
