SDP Criticizes INEC's Appeal on 2027 Election Timetable

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed its disapproval of the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) decision to appeal court rulings that struck parts of the election timetable for the 2027 general elections. SDP National Chairman Prof.

Sadiq Gomb stated that INEC should not challenge the judgment as it provides political parties with the necessary time to prepare for elections. Gomb emphasized that INEC has no right to appeal the ruling, which he believes creates opportunities for campaign activities and allows candidates who lost in party primaries to exercise their political rights.

He also mentioned that the SDP remains open to reconciling with members of a rival faction led by former National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam, in accordance with the party's constitution. Gomb maintained that leadership disputes within the party are internal matters and should not be determined by INEC.

The commission's announcement of the appeal follows two federal high court judgments questioning aspects of the 2027 election timetable.
