Nirav Shah Withdraws from Maine Senate Race, Endorses Jackson

Nirav Shah, the former Director of the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced his withdrawal from the Democratic primary for the US Senate on Sunday. He stated that party unity is crucial to defeating incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Shah's decision came shortly after he addressed delegates at the Maine Democratic Special Nominating Meeting in Augusta. He expressed that his initial motivation for entering the race was to prevent Collins from securing a sixth term, as Maine families are adversely affected by her votes.

Following his withdrawal, Shah endorsed former state Senator Troy Jackson, identifying him as the strongest candidate to challenge Collins in the general election. This endorsement marked a change from Shah's previous assertion that he was the best candidate for electability.

Shah's campaign faced criticism from some Democrats, including Senator Tammy Duckworth, who suggested that Maine deserved a better candidate due to Shah's handling of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak during his tenure in Illinois.
