Senate Urges Immediate Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren

The Nigerian Senate has called on the federal government to urgently rescue a group of schoolchildren and a teacher abducted by gunmen in Oriir Local Government Area, Oyo State. This demand was made during a session on Wednesday, following a motion sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari from Oyo Central.

The Senate highlighted the growing wave of attacks on schools, which poses a significant threat to the nation's future. The resolution emphasized the need for the federal government to strengthen and expand safe school initiatives, enhance surveillance, and improve intelligence gathering to secure vulnerable school communities across the country.

The Senate also expressed concern over the tragic loss of lives during the attack and noted that a toddler was among those abducted. Senator Adam Oshiomhole from Edo North called for a comprehensive review of funding for security agencies, while Senator Sundai Karimi from Kogi West urged state governments to play an active role in supporting security operations.

The Senate observed a minute of silence for the victims and directed security agencies to deploy necessary resources for the safe release of the abducted individuals.
