Nigerian Senate Urges President Tinubu to Address Bandit Attacks in Katsina State

The Nigerian Senate has raised concerns over the worsening insecurity in Katsina State due to recent bandit attacks in the Funtua Zone, resulting in the loss of at least 35 lives within 24 hours. Senator Danduts Mohammed, representing Katsina South, emphasized the critical need for comprehensive federal intervention to curb the escalating violence in the state.

The Senate President, Godswil Akpabio, allowed a debate on the motion, which received overwhelming support. Senator Mohammed highlighted recent attacks on Nigerian police personnel in Guga Bako Local Government Area, where three officers were killed and two critically injured.

The Senate noted that over 50,000 farmlands remain uncultivated due to persistent attacks, posing a severe threat to food security and livelihoods. President Tinubu had pledged to establish a military barrack in Malumfashi during a visit to the region.

The Senate directed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to equip a newly established police squadron in the area and called for immediate relief for affected families. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasized the urgency of intensifying military operations in Katsina to protect the rich agricultural region.
