Senegal Launches Local Hydroxyurea Production for Sickle Cell

Teranga Pharma, a pharmaceutical company in Senegal, has commenced the production of a locally manufactured generic version of hydroxyurea, a drug used in the management of sickle cell disease. This initiative represents an investment of about 4 billion CFA francs, equivalent to approximately US$7.1 million, in a new pharmaceutical facility located in Mbao, near Dakar.

The significance of this development lies in its potential to reduce costs and supply challenges associated with imported medicines, thereby improving access to treatment for patients suffering from sickle cell disease. Hydroxyurea is recognized for its role in increasing fetal hemoglobin levels, which can help lessen the frequency and severity of complications associated with the disease.

However, it is important to note that hydroxyurea is not a cure and requires consistent access and medical supervision. This project is part of a broader effort across Africa to enhance local production of essential medicines, addressing the healthcare needs of populations affected by sickle cell disease.
