SERAP Urges UN to Address Nigeria's Insecurity Crisis

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take urgent action regarding Nigeria's worsening insecurity crisis. In an open letter dated May 30, 2026, SERAP invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, warning that Nigeria's escalating insecurity poses a significant threat to international peace and security.

The organization highlighted the grave human rights violations occurring across Nigeria, including mass abductions, killings, and attacks on civilians, particularly in states such as Oyo, Benue, Borno, Plateau, Kaduna, and Zamfara. SERAP noted that the situation has gone beyond a domestic concern, with armed groups operating across borders, leading to widespread humanitarian suffering.

The letter referenced recent incidents, including the abduction of 25 pupils and seven teachers in Oyo State and attacks in Borno State that resulted in numerous casualties. SERAP urged the UN to coordinate international responses and strengthen measures to protect civilians amid the ongoing violence.
