NiMet Warns of Severe Thunderstorms in 14 States

The National Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued an urgent weather advisory on September 8, 2026, warning residents in at least 14 states to prepare for severe thunderstorms. The advisory is valid from 18:18 local time on September 8 through to 00:18 on September 9.

Severe thunderstorm cells were observed over Taraba and Borno states at the time of the advisory. The storm system is moving westward and is expected to impact Benue, Kogi, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, and Kebbi states within one to six hours.

NiMet outlined potential hazards, including strong winds that could displace unsecured outdoor items, localized flash flooding in low-lying areas, and reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall. The agency advised airline operators to obtain specific weather reports before making operational decisions and urged households to secure loose outdoor items.

Motorists were advised to drive cautiously during rainfall, and residents were warned against crossing flooded areas. NiMet emphasized the importance of staying informed and taking early action.
