Sharia Council Calls for Review of El-Rufai's Detention

The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has called for a review of the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, warning that arbitrary or politically motivated actions could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Secretary-General Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, the council stressed the importance of due process and the rule of law, asserting that every Nigerian is entitled to fundamental rights and presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The SCSN expressed concern over the circumstances of El-Rufai’s detention and the challenges he faces in meeting bail conditions. The council urged authorities to operate within constitutional confines and called for restraint from actions perceived as politically motivated persecution.

It emphasized that justice must be manifestly seen to be done and that the credibility of Nigeria’s institutions is vital for national unity and stability.
