Shearer Defends Awoniyi After Controversial Red Card

Alan Shearer defended Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi following his dismissal during Coventry City’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton at the CBS Arena on Sunday. Awoniyi received a straight red card in the second half for a flailing elbow on Brighton defender Maxim de Cuyper.

Shearer questioned the decision, stating that the contact occurred as both players competed for the ball and did not constitute violent conduct. He noted that the referee did not initially show a red card, suggesting that the VAR process should have allowed for a more thorough review.

Shearer argued that if Awoniyi had deliberately elbowed De Cuyper, a red card would be justified, but the incident did not warrant such a severe punishment. Following Awoniyi's dismissal, Coventry, already trailing, conceded a penalty and suffered their fourth consecutive defeat without scoring.

Awoniyi now faces a three-game ban, missing matches against Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Newcastle.
