Shettima Mourns Bamanga Tukur, A True Nigerian Patriot

Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed profound sadness over the death of Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, who passed away on September 12, 2026, at the age of 90. Tukur, a former Governor of old Gongola State and National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was recognized as a patriot and a global citizen.

Shettima highlighted Tukur's impactful career, noting his role as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, where he modernized Nigeria's maritime infrastructure and expanded cargo-handling capacity. He recalled Tukur's contributions to rural development and education during his governorship, which was cut short by a military coup in December 1983.

Tukur also served as Minister for Industries and later as National Chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014, where he prioritized party stability. Shettima emphasized Tukur's legacy as an institution-builder and a leader who left an enduring mark on Nigeria and Africa.
