NSC Advocates Port Regulation to Boost North-East Trade

The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC) has placed significant emphasis on effective port regulation to enhance trade and non-oil exports in the North-East region of Nigeria. During an enlightening seminar held in Bauchi, Mr.

Nanbol Nanl, the NSC North-East Zonal Director, criticized the current port system and promoted the need for regulatory improvements to facilitate business and strengthen trade. Established in 1978 to protect the interests of importers and exporters, the NSC became Nigeria's port economic regulator in 2014 following the port concession program.

The director noted progress in tariff moderation, standardization, and dispute resolution, although legal and infrastructural gaps require attention. The seminar aimed to enlighten stakeholders on import/export processes and non-oil export opportunities, with the Nigeria Customs Service encouraged to expedite cargo clearance.

Alhaji Inuwa Galloj, chairman of the National Association of Gum Arabic Producers and Processors Export Nigeria, stressed the importance of educating farmers and traders on export procedures to improve compliance with international standards and enhance Nigeria's non-oil revenue base.
