Akande Urges Women to Embrace Leadership at Conference

On Thursday, former minister Onikepo Akande addressed Nigerian women in Ibadan, Oyo State, urging them to shun self-destructive practices and support one another in their quest for leadership positions. This call was made during her keynote address at the 2026 Ibadan Women’s Conference, held at the House of Ok Aremo in Ibadan North Local Government Area. The conference, themed "Developing Ibadan Women Leadership Advocacy," is part of the activities celebrating the Ibadan Cultural Festival and will commence on March 23, 2026, to honor the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. Akande highlighted the challenges women face in a patriarchal society and emphasized the need for women to build networks, gain confidence, and work collaboratively to achieve their goals. Guest lecturer Yetunde Adegok also stressed the importance of women's leadership in promoting cultural heritage and socio-economic development. The conference aims to empower women and encourage their participation in leadership roles.
