Kano Assembly Proposes Review of Rent Control Law

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated a review of the state’s rent control law in response to alarming increases in house and shop rents. Speaker Ismail Falgore made this announcement during a plenary session on Tuesday, following a motion by Musa Kachako, the representative for Takai Constituency.
Kachako raised concerns about landlords raising rents without adequate notice, making it difficult for residents and business owners to manage their finances. He cited examples of annual house rents rising from N100,000 to between N200,000 and N300,000, and shop rents increasing from N1 million to N2 million within a year.
Kachako emphasized the need for a legal framework that ensures reasonable rent increases and protects tenants from arbitrary decisions. He acknowledged landlords' rights to earn returns on their investments but insisted that tenants deserve fairness and protection against excessive increases.
The proposed review aims to establish clearer rules for rent adjustments and balance the interests of property owners and tenants.
