Sokoto Assembly Addresses Poor GSM, Internet Services

On Wednesday, during a plenary session, the Sokoto State House of Assembly adopted a motion expressing concern over the persistent poor GSM and internet services across Sokoto State. The motion was moved by Aminu Gidado, representing Sokoto South II Constituency, and seconded by Shamsu Aliyu from Wurno Constituency.

The assembly noted the adverse effects of weak network coverage, including frequent call drops, delayed messages, and prolonged service outages, which disrupt communication and business activities, as well as education, healthcare, banking, and security operations. Gidado emphasized that the lack of reliable telecommunications services disconnects residents from essential services, affecting businesses, students, civil servants, security agencies, and financial institutions, leading to economic losses and hardship.

Following the motion, Speaker Alhaji Tukur Bala put it to a voice vote, resulting in unanimous adoption. The assembly subsequently directed relevant committees to invite representatives from telecommunications companies and regulatory agencies to explain the causes of the ongoing network challenges and present measures to address them.

The lawmakers urged the Sokoto State government to collaborate with relevant federal agencies to improve telecommunications infrastructure and service delivery across the state.
