Sokoto Hisbah Bans Marriage Gifts and Wedding DJs

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board, led by Commander Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, has implemented an immediate ban on several marriage-related practices, including the custom of presenting gifts during marriage introductions, commonly referred to as “Na Gani In So.” This ban encompasses assorted items such as soft drinks, bottled water, biscuits, sweets, and kola nuts, as well as the use of DJs and loudspeakers at ceremonies. The board also prohibited mixed-gender gatherings for entertainment, indecent hairstyles for children and youths, and excessive spending on bridal gifts (lefe).

Jatau stated that these practices are innovations (bid’ah) that contradict the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and warned of negative consequences for marriages conducted in such a manner. He urged families to simplify marriage arrangements and avoid unnecessary extravagance, emphasizing that the board would enforce these directives strictly.

Community leaders were also called upon to promote moral values within their localities.
