Sokoto State's Ramadan Feeding Program: A Social Initiative

The Ramadan feeding program in Sokoto State began 19 years ago during Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko's administration. It has transitioned from a charitable gesture to a structured social welfare initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable populations during the holy month of Ramadan.

The program is designed to provide 34,000 plates of food daily, with a budget of 1 billion Naira approved for the 2026 Ramadan feeding initiative. This program not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also aims to stabilize the economy by providing temporary employment through the engagement of ad hoc staff for kitchen services and logistics.

The initiative reflects a broader strategy to promote Islamic values and strengthen social welfare, including support for religious leaders and institutions. It seeks to create a safe environment for residents observing Ramadan, reducing the risk of ideological extremism by providing financial support to imams and religious leaders, thereby influencing public consciousness positively.
