Sokoto LGA Chair Raises Alarm Over Banditry Crisis

Alhaji Abba Isah Sadiq Achida, the chairman of Wurno Local Government Area in Sokoto State, has raised alarms over the deteriorating security situation in the region, stating that residents can no longer sleep with both eyes closed due to the frequent activities of bandits. He reported that the banditry has led to the loss of over 100 innocent lives and has left many others abducted, with thousands affected by the violence.

The situation has forced residents to seek refuge in primary schools during the day for safety. Achida criticized the bandits for routinely blocking major roads, particularly around Achida and Goronyo Market.

In response to the crisis, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has redeployed hundreds of police officers across Nigeria, a move that has sparked mixed reactions nationwide. Security experts have raised concerns about the long-term implications of this redeployment, emphasizing the need for a visible police presence in communities to deter crime effectively.
