Family of Killed NYSC Member Rejects Army's Account

The family of Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member killed in an incident involving military personnel, has rejected the Nigerian Army's account of his death. According to the family, Jamiu was shot in the head at close range by soldiers during an operation in Dei Dei, Abuja, on April 25.

The military had claimed that Jamiu sustained injuries from crossfire while troops responded to a distress call regarding an armed robbery. However, the family disputes this narrative, stating that no weapons were recovered at the scene and that there were no reports of robbery that night.

They allege that soldiers instructed a vigilante group to clean up the scene, raising concerns about evidence preservation. The family demands an independent investigation outside the military's chain of command, the identification and suspension of responsible personnel, and a formal public apology from the army.

They also noted that soldiers admitted to mistakenly killing an innocent person in the presence of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
