Southampton's Tonda Eckert Charged in Spygate Scandal

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for his involvement in the "spygate scandal." The FA alleges that Eckert authorized the observation of training sessions of rival teams Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough during the previous season. An Independent Disciplinary Commission had previously stated that Eckert approved the plan, which resulted in Southampton's expulsion from the Championship playoffs after Middlesbrough complained about unauthorized filming at their training ground.

Following the investigation, the FA charged Eckert with misconduct for allegedly breaching Rule E3.1. Southampton has until July 28 to respond to the charge and has expressed its full support for Eckert and his staff as they aim to return to the Premier League.

The FA's allegations indicate that Southampton spied on opponents multiple times between December 2025 and May 2026. Southampton's Championship campaign is set to begin on August 16 against Watford.
